Piracy? Arrrgggghhh - What piracy?

Free! Free! It's Free!!!! (Ahem - you get what you pay for...)

If it's free it's me and I'll take three?

Is free a business model? Should free be expected? Is free sustainable? Supportable? Do you download music illegally? Movies? Is this something you have come to expect as a right rather than expect to pay?

Peruse the following three articles. Please share a response on how you feel about music/movie/software piracy.

Who do you think it hurts the most? What do you think a solution could be?

  1. The piracy of these items are pretty much the way of life. Think about it, everyone wants to make money. But since technology just makes it easier to get movies, music, etc. then piracy will take away from the Record/CD stores, but will bring income to those internet networks. There really isn't any such as FREE, it's really who doesn't get caught because downloading this "FREE" movies, music, etc. is illegal. So the ones that get caught will be hurt the most. The solution, well there isn't one really since technology keeps growing.

  2. The piracy of not only music and movies, but also games and other applications is something that is inevitable with the power of the internet. There really isn't any one way to completely stop it, as the internet allows for unlimited freedom and sharing of any type of file. Most artists, musical or motion picture are not really being hurt as much as most people could think from this. I, and thousands of other people actually do buy music, not just physical as disks and vinyl goes, but also digital copies from online vendor such as iTunes and Napster. Bands, singers, and actors can perform not from only selling their art, but performing it live at a concert or showing the motion picture in a movie theater. Piracy further hurts the creators of computer applications and games who have no other source of income, except for selling their product to consumers.

  3. I agree with Michael and Joel. The internet is so addiciting and people try to go onto sites such as limewire, to download music and sometimes movies for free. I know that i have downloaded music online on limewire, and the one thing that is on eveyone's mind is that they will not get caught of piracy. Because there are so many free downloading sites to go to these days most stores that sell music and movies have started having less business, especially with people these days buying itunes gift cards to buy apps, music, and movies on itunes. Because there are so many sites to visit I'm sure that most feel that they can download music without getting caught, so i guess pircacy is something that we can expect because it allows us to do this. People will test the consequences until they relize they downloading a virus or something, which then they will to start paying for their music. Downloading sites hurts music stores and can eventually hurt the consumer if they get caught. People will always try the easy wa out, and by this, i mean taking risks. With the internet growing, and more "FREE" downloading sites are being created, it makes us wonder if there will ever be a solution for this.

  4. I personally agreed with the third article. I believe that free sites like google and facebook will soon be overtaken by the next "big" thing. Back in the day everyone would advertise their new facebook accounts through their old myspaces ones. Now, it is more common you see someone advertising their twitter accounts on facebook by saying "follow me". I am looking forward to see what is next. What will the next new internet provider give us that google doesn't already.

  5. At the end of the day people want to save money. This is an easy task with the internet because you can downlad pretty much anything now days for free. Movies, music and different apps can your for free at the click of a mouse. When choosing this method it hurts stores and music artist. People continue to use this method becuase there is a very slim chance of ever getting caught. The internet i believe is at its highest. I dont see any other next big thing taking over. Some inventions just cant be improved more than they alreay have been.

  6. The internet is used by a lot of people. And as the internet improves the amount of time people spend using the internet increases. The piracy of music, movies, software and almost any thing you want continues to grow. The most I have downloaded is just music and a few movies. But what you can download from the internet is almost unlimited, as i learned from my friends who some of them have downloaded a lot of software for free that is expensive if you buy it legally.

  7. Piracy is an issue that has always been present, and always will be. Just like any other laws that get broken, the reason the laws exist is because people break them. If it wasn't a problem there would be no law against it. The biggest problem with piracy is that it is constantly evolving. As soon as lawmakers and enforcers find a way to stop current piracy, 'pirates' find a new way that takes law makers months to catch up on. Piracy is a business and in that will thrive for years and years to come. But like anything in life, it is not free. There are risks, and even if not caught by the authorities you will pay some price in life.

  8. Piracy has always been an ongoing issue and that won't change. As often as people are on computers, there is going to be piracy. For most people its music, movies or even episodes of their favorite TV shows. The biggest issue is people don't want to pay for something they can get for free, even if it is not legal. Most people don't think they will get caught. However when they do, they will pay the price.

  9. Nothing is free, because technically downloading the "free" music and the "free" movies are illegal. Yes it's nice to do until you get caught. Once someone gets caught they are the one's that will be hurting the most because they will have to pay back what they actually stole.

  10. I believe that there is nothing we can do to stop how fast technology is moving and wide it is becoming. Everybody enjoys getting stuff over the internet for me so thats what makes it so popular. If you can get it for free, then why pay for it. I think it may be a little while before the next big thing comes along.

  11. There is not really a way to stop piracy completely because as soon as officials stop of the illegal actions people find another way to go around the system. Nothing is really free these day this includes downloading because it is illegal. If the downloader does not pay for what he/she is downloading now they will later in life when they get caught.

  12. The internet makes life alot easier these days, but it also makes it easier to do illegal things. Piracy is everywhere on the internet, some people mean to do it and some people dont, but most do. Piracy is something that most people do, and therefore they are breaking the law and people who do not follow rules always get caught.

  13. Technology has made things easier to aquire for FREE, but there are many other ways of getting this kind of stuff just on a different market. A good example would be the street vendors in New York City they sell all kinds of boot leg DVD's and CD's.
