Web 2.0 - Producer? Consumer? Lurker? Leecher?

Web 2.0 – are you a producer or just a contributor?

The evolution continues – from just a few static pages of content – to multimedia displays and streaming from well financed outlets – to an interactive anyone can be someone with the click of a button. The original idea of the world wide web was to share information and data – mainly amongst academics and researchers. With commercialization in the mid 1990's the Web was opened up to anyone for better or worse. Early adopters could fairly easily create their own content. "Personal Web Server" could be added to Windows 95! GeoCities was an early hosting site for your personal homepage, and ISP's offered hosting free with connection subscriptions. But you still had to know a little bit – how to arrange, god forbid maybe even code a little on your own too….

Now, with the plethora of tools available connected is ubiquitous. Arranging in Word or other common tools is easy and publishing a quick click. Heck, who cares about layout when Facebook and others just plop it down for you anyway. Content is key, not looks. Right? And the RIGHT to CONTRIBUTE is a universal LAW now, correct? You got something to say – and EVERYONE has to LISTEN!

Where security, legality, and reason meet?

So – a 41 year old, pregnant, substitute English teacher shows up for school, and eventually is convicted of 4 counts of corrupting morals of a child and faces 40 years in prison…because pornographic popups appeared on the teacher's desk computer. Ever feel like you were being railroaded and no one would listen that it wasn't your fault?

Ah – the case of Julie Amero never fails to be a beacon of cautionary wonder. The legal system has and will never catch up full to technology. Has never done so throughout history and most probably never will in the future.

The perfect storm of Kafka-esque quality (http://www.amazon.com/Trial-Franz-Kafka/dp/0805209999) it is impossible to even begin to approach this situation without digressing into adjectives of sundry nature.

That said – with our talks of quality sources of information – and the subsequent debate of Wikipedia as a good source or not – I offer a reasonably decent Wikipedia page on a very controversial topic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Connecticut_v._Julie_Amero

As we can see, it does provide a brief outline of the case, without coloring too far in any direction with bias to either side. Now – journalism of today does just that. Right or wrong, it is reality and almost impossible to get away from and find a true "impartial" accounting of a story.

Below are a couple of articles and papers that flesh out this story a bit more. I have also included a link to a blog from the police officer who was the sole expert for the prosecution. No certifications, no higher education degrees, not special training, yeah – I mentioned it was a wonderful cautionary tale of how all reason goes out the window when technology hits the courtroom…

From the other side:

http://amero-eckelberry.blogspot.com/

The final result is that after the District Attorney lost re-election, the conviction was vacated. Due to overwhelming pressure and publicity generated, a re-trial was ordered. To avoid further trauma, stress and expense, Amero pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and required to forfeit her teaching credentials. Her career is ended, and her life ruined. She miss-carried her child, and is bankrupt due to legal fees. The officer in question is still on-duty in Norwich, CT.

It is easy to get flabbergasted at the extent of incomprehensible lack of logic in this entire situation. BUT – for the sake of this blog let's piece together some line items for you to generate thought on.

While it may be an injustice to prosecute an unaware substitute teacher to this extent, we can all agree that having pornographic images of any size or type in a 7th grade classroom is not just bad, but indeed criminal. So if the sub was not to blame – WHO IS? Where is the responsibility in this case? Is it the head of IT who did not properly secure his network? Is it the school board for not approving an extended budget to allow for full security? Is it the original teacher for not reporting the computer was infected? Is it a principal who may not have fostered an atmosphere of diligence and professionalism in his Jr. High School? How about the police officer who admittedly intimidated defense volunteer experts?

So – should someone have been prosecuted? Who? Why? Why Not? What would you have done? Does it change your attitude on security? Antivirus/Anti-malware software? Will you be more likely to keep it up to date?

Yes – a lot of links, but a lot of choices and a lot of options. The purpose of this blog post is for you to make a recommendation and justify it.

Imagine you have a roommate who needs to buy a new computer, of some sort, for school. Rusting you, and thinking you actually know what you are talking about – provide this friend a recommendation. Give three options – make sure at least one is a desktop, one a notebook/laptop, and the third can be anything else including, but not limited to: a netbook, tablet, iPad, or even advanced smartphone…

For each of the three options, provide details of the system in the following areas: Processor, memory, storage, display, input connection types and numbers (USB/Firewire/PCMCIA, etc)

Also, make sure to mention which operating system is in use, and be sure to include options for basic applications needed for a student, like what kind of word processor they should have.

In the end – DON'T FORGET TO ACTUALLY SAY WHICH YOU SUGGEST ABOVE THE OTHERS AND WHY!!!

An iPad in every pot!

It is a constant source of amazement/amusement to me to see what passes as news now-a-days… But I find it particularly insightful when items from academia hit the popular press. A local university made splashes this past spring announcing "An iPad and a chicken in every pot!!!" – Well maybe not a pot, but I tend to mix my political slogans as much as my metaphors… But they did plan on handing out a shiny new toy to every student. In the end did the University have ANY plan to integrate those devices into the curriculum??? Well, it sounded good at the time….

This brings me to Harrisburg University. Yes, that Harrisburg. They have hit the free publicity mother load as they trod as close to that fine line of censorship as they could. Those rebels, I tell ya. They had the audacity to block most all Social Media sites for a whole week for people accessing the Internet through their networks – all in the name of research! No matter that similar experiments have been done in various forms and sizes at schools across this land for the past decade or more, and even longer than that if you count non-internet addictions (Pavlov's dogs anyone?). So this one hit the press – all the way to the UK (I swear the Guardian will pick up anything to fill space….) But why this one? Why now? Is it because of the Facebook movie about to come out? Is it touching some raw nerve of 'we have a right to be distracted; you can't take THAT away from us'???

Ah well – maybe it's something I just can't wrap my head around. Like how the Pirates have gone from three consecutive division titles to 18 consecutive years under .500 – or how anyone believed Joaquin Phoenix was actually trying to carve a pseudo-Amish niche in the Rap world – some things are just unexplainable.

So here are 4 links to stories with different slants on the whole she-bang. The final one is the 'I'm Still Here' catch – seems Harrisburg U was just trying to get our attention. Yes, they do hold a sold out conference on how to leverage social media and other legal and political ramifications of the channel. An iPad in every pot indeed…

http://www.harrisburgu.edu/academics/professional/socialmedia/index.php

After all that – Please update your blogs with your personal ruminations on the following –

What qualifies as a social network internet site? How many do you belong to? What do you 'get' out of it? What does it 'get' out of you? How important has Facebook/any other site become in your life?

IT vs IS – Difference? Importance? Focus?

Take a look at the brief video below, only 2 minutes! http://www.silicon.com/management/cio-insights/2010/08/31/information-or-technology-uk-cios-reveal-whats-more-important-39746283/?s_cid=105

Now create a blog post answering the question from your perspective…

Start by describing what you think is the difference between IT and IS. Remember, when describing the difference between two things you need to give a definition of each, and then directly say what the difference between the two is! What's more important in your life right now as a student – IT or IS? Do you constantly run into roadblocks due to access to a computer?

Compatibility issues? Reliability problems? Then it may be IT…..

Transforming the lectures/notes/resources into something ingrained in your brain that can be made useful later for a project or test? Then it may be IS….

Perspectives – three sides of the story

Who is watching you? What are you doing when you THINK no one is looking?

Below are three different short news stories relating to a situation developing outside of Philadelphia right now. The long and the short of it is that a school district may have misused a security program that allowed them remote access into built in cameras on computers that students had taken home.

Read the three articles; pick a topic/perspective to write a commentary from:

  1. As a student, how paranoid are you now that Big Brother may be invading your privacy?

  2. As a school district, what measures can you go to in an effort to protect your property?

  3. As a software manufacturer, what is your level of responsibility on how your product is used?

Review the above articles relating to the iPad and in the final article the iStore. With more challengers every day to the iPhone (Blackberry Storm, Google Droids, Palm Pre, etc…) that are more free with their business practices, how can Apple continue to differentiate themselves in the phone/mobile device market? Are they in a threatened position?

IT/Communications in time of tragedy

There have been many instances in the recent past where the true powers of technology and communication methods have come to light in efforts of response and recovery. There are situations that hit from out of the blue and are so immense that it is seemingly impossible to comprehend or start to fix anything let alone everything.

Above are three links to three quick blurbs related to technology and Haiti. Create a blog entry with your thoughts on how Technology is playing a changing role in the response to natural disasters and humanitarian relief. Think also on the contrarian side and how there are those who may think that early efforts in restoring a technology infrastructure take away from what are more obvious life saving efforts on the surface… what would your response be to them?
